Welcome to MyHomeSpace

my home space

Interactive information resources for the design of housing, technology, and support within Australia’s National Disability Strategy

Aims

My Home Space will help people with disability and their families, as well as other stakeholders, to consider key concepts for housing, technology and support design. Information has been provided in the context of Australia’s National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

My Home Space offers 3D experiences of virtual spaces with embedded information that has been gathered from research and current policy documents. It offers access to online reports and links to other resources.

"I like the freedom I have in my own home"
Cam, living in his own unit

Of course, building an inclusive life is a different journey for each person.  My Home Space offers an early step by presenting the research and the experiences of others through the lens of the NDIS Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) framework.  As part of a coordinated approach to planning housing and support, My Home Space can assist decision-making for people with disability, families, government, and design and health professionals.

This project was led by researchers from Monash University with external collaborators, and was funded by the Department of Social Services.

My Home Space Tool

The My Home Space tool presents key findings from this research, and current policy, in an accessible ‘gamespace’ format. Visitors using the tool can explore design decisions for built, technology and support environments, at their own pace. Four different building types and design categories are provided, and align with the NDIS SDA framework.  The information delivered through 3D virtual spaces, and embedded detail views, can be filtered to show Tenant Experience; Assistive Technology; Circulation and Safety; Standards and Guidelines. Links from the My Home Space tool provide design guidelines and ‘things to consider’ reports.

Team

The My Home Space project has been delivered by an interdisciplinary research team, led by Libby Callaway from the Department of Occupational Therapy, Monash University and A/Prof Kate Tregloan, Monash Art Design & Architecture.

The research team has brought together collaborators and contributors including NDIS participants, families, occupational therapy professionals, architects and building designers, government and non-government representatives, support providers and funding bodies. The team has also drawn on the expert skills of professional access consultants, communication designers, and web developers.
