Robust Design Group Home

Images and all text notes from your selected SDA + Housing type in the My Home Space tool are provided here.  You should also explore these within the 3D virtual tour environment, when considering their impact on the design and experience of supported housing.

Robust housing that has been designed to incorporate a high level of physical access provision and be very resilient, reducing the likelihood of reactive maintenance and reducing the risk to the participant and the community. This housing should be built to Livable Housing Australia ‘Silver’ level. Resilient but inconspicuous materials should be used, that can withstand heavy use and minimises the risk of injury and neighbourhood disturbance. These materials may include: high impact wall lining, fittings and fixtures (e.g. blinds, door handles); secure windows, doors and external areas; appropriate sound proofing if residents are likely to cause significant noise disturbances (if required, must be retrofitted in new builds if not previously installed at building stage); and laminated glass. Dwelling layout that offers areas of egress and retreat for staff and other residents to avoid harm may be required. Consideration must be given to providing adequate space and safeguards throughout the property to accommodate the needs of residents with complex behaviours(1).

Group homes are detached low-rise dwellings with garden or courtyard areas. They have similar features to the NDIS definition of a home; however, Group Homes are distinguished from other houses by the larger number of residents (four or five long term residents)(2).
